The Climate Cool School project was launched in Guangzhou in March 2007. The project aims to increase secondary school teachers and students' awareness of climate change and energy issues and to encourage them to tackle global warming through practical on campus action. It is hoped that the positive attitudes and actions generated by the project will spread to the surrounding communities.
The project was jointly organised by the Bureau of Education Guangzhou, Bureau of Environment Protection Guangzhou and the British Council Guangzhou with the support of the Guangzhou Teenager Science and Technology Education Association and Guangzhou Promotion and Education Center for Environment Protection. The participants are secondary schools and polytechnic schools which have been titled "Green School" in Guangzhou.
Themes of the Activities
Each participating team is required to submit a proposal for a Climate Cool School activity, which needs to be designed by each team on its own. The proposed activity should be centred around the influences of climate change on schools and how the team¡¯s school can tackle climate change.
The action plans provided by the participating teams may directly target climate change by saving energy and water, recycling, greening the campus and/or campus traffic or by of other similar actions that a school might possibly adopt to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. A team may decide to take a different approach, however. For example, a team may choose to proactively publicise the relevant knowledge of climate change through brochures, meetings or exhibitions in the school with the intent to increase the awareness of climate change among their fellow students. Teams with strong hands-on skills may decide to use existing resources to design facilities that save energy or gather and exploit new energy sources.
