Climate Cool Green Your School Competition

The Climate Cool Green Your School competition was rolled out to 130 schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, reaching 100,000 school pupils in 2007. Students engage with practical environmental learning by coming up with imaginative solutions to help their schools save money and improve their environmental performance. The students then lead the way in implementing their ideas, gaining skills in decision-making and project management. Through dedicated training workshops, teachers develop an awareness of different teaching methods that can be adopted in communicating climate change as well as knowledge of how to encourage students' creative involvement.

The Beijing Climate Cool - Green Your School competition final was filmed by "Green Space" of China Central Television's Science and Education Channel (CCTV-10). Three fifteen-minute programmes were broadcast in January 2008, and approximately 10 million people nationwide watched the programmes.

In Hong Kong, the Climate Cool E-learning Platform is designed to tie in with local school curriculums and to be used flexibly across secondary schools for junior high school grade 3 (age 12 –14) in mainland China and Years 12 –13 (age 15–17) in Hong Kong. It harnesses cutting-edge education technology from the UK that puts the students at the heart of personalised learning.

In 2008, project will be expanded to 6 cities around China including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Chongqing. From April to June 2008, 193 teams from Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu opened their team blogs to display their green school proposals

From 7 – 26 May, their proposals have attracted about 415,000 online votes. Based on the result of voting and comments from expert panels, 37 teams from Beijing and 5 from Chengdu have been shortlisted and entered the second stage of the competition. 42 teams and individuals from Shanghai have won different local awards.

Climate Cool Green Your School Proposal activity is to be launched in Guangzhou and Chongqing in early August 2008.

In October, top 5 teams from each region, will be selected as finalists to compete at the National Grand Final to be held in December 2008. We will work in partnership with "Green Space" from CCTV-10 again, to film and broadcast the wonderful final competition.
