In 2009, 200 university and middle school students were chosen to attend Young Ambassadors’ Climate Camp based on their performance in the Green Your School competition (GYS) and the Sustainable Innovation Student Competition (SISC). Through interactive workshops, field trips and public engagement activities, the camp equips participants with skills such as project management, communications, and innovation. It also provides the information they need to fulfil their responsibilities as Climate Champions. In cooperation with UNICEF China and National Development and Reform Commission, a select group of Champions was selected to attend COP15 in Copenhagen, where they had the opportunity to broadcast their views to world leaders.
In December 2009, the British Council brought Climate Champions from more than 40 countries, including 7 high school students and 11 SISC winners from China, to the COP15 negotiations in Copenhagen. This provided an opportunity for them to witness and experience an important international conference and to voice the opinions of young people and thus influence discussions and decision-making there.
