Energy Efficiency Declaration”(太阳能效率宣言)。
Ding Yinghan
from Beijing No.8 Middle School
Hello, everyone. I am the 2008 International Climate Champion* from Beijing, China.
My name is Ding Yinghan. I am a 10th grade student studying in Beijing No.8 Middle
School. In my school, I joined the Climate Cool club. I am the head member of
our climate cool group called S.E.E.D., which stands for Solar Energy Efficiency
Declaration. We are doing our project on the use of solar energy in our daily
lives and the transform of solar energy into other forms of energy. We will also
be trying to persuade the general public to expand the effect of solar energy
products.
As a senior high school student in Beijing, I have long been interested in activities
related to protecting the environment. I was in the USA as a foreign exchange
student from August, 2006 to June, 2007. During that time, I participated in a
lot of activities to protect the environment, including the long walk on World's
Earth Day and promotion of the use of energy saving light bulbs. When I came back
to China, I helped organize a series of activities in our school to raise the
awareness of protecting the environment, like making cloth bags and give them
away on the streets to people in the community. The UK Foreign Secretary Mr. David
Milliband came to our school one time to talk with students about environmental
issues. I was the MC for that conference as well.
During March 23rd to March 31st, 2008, I went to London to attend the International
Climate Champion's conference together with two other International Climate Champions
from Chengdu and Hong Kong. The main purpose of the conference was to prepare
for the Kobe Challenge in May in Kobe, Japan. We have drawn out three options
for our Kobe Challenge and are willing to get the votes from all young people
in the world to help us get the final one to be presented to the Environmental
Ministers.
During May 17th to May 24th, 2008, I went to Kobe, Japan to attend the Youth Summit
of the G8 Environmental Ministers'Meeting together with Wang Yijie and Kurt. We
have visited a lot of places and spread the message of climate change issues.
I got a chance to meet the Chinese Environmental Minister on May 24th and presented
our Kobe Challenge to him on behalf of young people in China. It was the most
meaningful experience I had while I was in Kobe.
*Ding Yinghan is one of the 3 International Climate Champions (ICC) from China.
The ICC initiative is part of the British Council's Low Carbon Futures programme
of activities engaging young people, local partners and influential people around
the world to build understanding of and action on climate change. The ICC initiative
was launched in 2007 through competitions in partnership with local organisations
in 13 countries. ICC is the representative of Young Climate Change Awareness Ambassadors.
