Workshop 1: Reporting Climate Change
The first workshop in the series began with an overview of 3 key questions: What is the greenhouse effect? What are the main greenhouse gases? How do we model their influence on the climate? The workshop also discussed policy responses to climate change such as mitigation and adaptation
Workshop 2: Climate Change and Energy
In October 2007, more than 50 journalists attended a workshop to discuss the use of fossil fuels and climate change, and to look at the professional skills needed to report accurately. UK and Chinese experts led discussions on the need for greater energy efficiency, the feasibility of using renewable energy and the development of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in China.
Workshop 3: Scientific Uncertainties in Climate Change
The third workshop, held in Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, examined the meteorological community's ability to forecast for the next century and give some indication as to the changes in the probability of certain meteorological events. Climate change has become a global issue, but can we definitely say warmer winters, typhoons and other extreme weather events are the result of climate change? The workshop examined how scientists face these issues, and how journalists can report short-term weather events versus climate change.
Workshop 4: Climate Change's Impacts on Local Communities and Grassroots Adaptation
This workshop examined the need to educate and communicate the effects of climate change at a local level to both decision makers in government and business, as well as the urban and rural populations. During the workshop, journalists gained a deeper understanding of the impact of climate change on local communities and grassroots adaptation strategies.
