Future of Carbon Capture and Climate Change

2009 Climate Cool Reporting Workshop Series I
“Carbon Capture” is the process of retaining and trapping carbon dioxide emitted by major fuel consumers in both chemical and physical ways to prevent the gas from entering into the atmosphere, so as to stop a further global warming. Because of its potential benefits in slowing climate change, countries from all over the world including China are taking active measures to promote it. However, there is still a long way to go in implementing the commercialization of carbon capture because of its high cost.

Facing such a new technology, how should we understand it more scientifically as journalists? What perspective should coverage be made from?

In order to help the media to give a scientific and objective coverage of the topic, we held the 2009 Climate Cool Reporting Workshop Series I: Future of Carbon Capture and Climate Change. Doctor Jon Gibbins, a lecturer from Imperial College London and pioneer of global carbon capture technology, Mr. Sun Wenbin, a Chinese expert who has participated in the first carbon capture project in China and General Manager of The GreenGen Co. and domestic senior media journalists shared their experiences with us.

This was a project of the second stage activities of the 2-year “Climate Cool” jointly held by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy and China Science and Technology Exchange Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Please refer to the courseware (Jun 17, am; Jun 17, pm), Lecture Notes of Chinese Experts and experts from the U.K as well as course schedule of the Workshop for detailed information.
